They are caused by blockage of central dopamine receptors. Oftentimes, these disorders persist even after discontinuation of the antipsychotic medication, and they are disabling the patients functionally and psychosocially. Medical therapeutic efforts with different psychopharmaceuticals, benzodiazepines or vitamin-E-preparations are frequently unsuccessful.
